Yet in my view another very serious mistake by the Portuguese authorities in this very unfortunate case: An interview by Alipio Ribeiro, the Chief Police Officer of PJ, to El Pais. The top police officer should not give an interview to a newspaper to comment on the specifics of an ongoing investigation. If he has decided to override the duty of silence (something he should explain in detail), there are better ways to communicate with the media and the public. At this point, once the case is over, a serious inquiry should investigate police conduct. And I mean a serious inquiry, not the standard administrative bureaucratic approach that leads to nowhere.
